Exterior staircases — typical Montreal architecture. Row houses were made so small, that staircases were built outside of the house to save on space. The city banned exterior staircases in the 40s, due to the safety hazards it caused, especially during Montreal’s long winters. The ban was lifted in the 90s to continue this feature city’s characteristic architecture.
I wasn’t able to get a shot of the more archetypal spiral staircases, but the L-shaped staircases on the left-hand photo are also common.
